James Urrutia grew up in South San Francisco before moving to Southern California to start his undergraduate work at Long Beach State. After a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to South Texas, James decided to transfer to BYU-Idaho where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics. He then returned to Northern California where he worked as a Forensic Economist before starting law school at BYU in 2008. After his first year of law school James worked at the law firm of Baker and McKenzie in its Buenos Aires, Argentina office.
