Jeff and Janet Matthews Nelson met at the University of Utah. Janet graduated with a degree in Mathematics, and certified to teach in secondary schools. Jeff graduated with a degree in Communications. Jeff studied for a semester at Universität Konstanz, in Konstanz, Germany, while Janet finished her degree. They married weeks before Jeff began law school at J. Reuben Clark Law School, from which he graduated in 1984. Janet taught high school math while Jeff was in law school. Janet and Jeff moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1984. Jeff has worked for a number of law firms in New York, including Kageneck & Witthuhn, King & Spalding and McDermott Will & Emery, first concentrating on German investment in the U.S., and then project finance. Since 1998 Jeff has worked for Westdeutche Landesbank (now Portigon AG) as in-house counsel, which included a three-year stint with the entire family in Düsseldorf, Germany, the bank’s headquarters. Janet’s primary work for years was at home raising their four children. She recently received her masters degree in Mathematics Education from Hunter College in New York City, and Professional Certification in New York State. She has been teaching mathematics for the last four years at Hunter College High School in New York City. In 2014 Janet was called to serve on the Young Women General Board of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is one of five from outside Utah to currently serve in that calling. Jeff and Janet have been participating in the Annual Symposium of the International Center for Law and Religion Studies since 2006.
